Seattle has been a city in love with drama since the days of vaudeville. The Seattle community's desire for exceptional live theater is met by a number of dynamic venues and companies. In total there are 29 professional theatre companies, 56 fringe theatre companies and 7 theatre schools in the greater Seattle area! Some of the most popular places to catch some live drama:

5th Avenue Theatre

The 5th Avenue Theatre's lavish Chinese interior (modeled after architecture found in the Forbidden City, the temple of Heavenly Peace and the Summer Palace) provides a bold setting for both locally produced musicals and the best of touring Broadway. Opened in 1926 as a vaudeville stage, the 5th is a Seattle entertainment landmark. Today the theatre is the home of the 5th Avenue Musical Theatre Company, a non-profit organization serving more than 300,000 annually.

ACT Theatre

Pacific Northwest Ballet

Pacific Northwest Ballet is one of the largest and most highly regarded ballet companies in the United States. For many seasons PNB has had the nation's largest per capita dance attendance. Each year the company presents over 90 performances at Marion Oliver McCaw Hall and on tour, including the beloved winter tradition of Nutcracker.

The Paramount Theatre

The Paramount is one of the Seattle's most versatile performing arts venues. Opened in 1928 as the city's largest movie palace, the theater has since hosted a wide variety of shows, concerts and plays. The modern theatre features a fully automated convertible floor system that transforms the auditorium space into an elegant ballroom. In addition to nationally touring musical and comedy acts, the theater hosts a Broadway series of plays and musicals each year.

Theater Schmeater

Theater Schmeater is dedicated to finding the great plays of our time. Presenting 5-6 main stage shows and 5-6 late night productions each year, the company is dedicated to presenting works from underrepresented voices. Theater Schmeater is also dedicated to cultivate a love of theater in youth: their Free Classics in the Park presents the great plays of classical literature for families to enjoy, and throughout the year those under eighteen are admitted free to any production.
